John Parris, in his Roaming the Mountains column in the Asheville Citizen recently, described the discovery of the Imperial Tree of Japan right here in Polk County in the late 1870s. Parris says it was Giles Pear son who first found the tall tree with the lavender blossoms growing in the Pacolet Valley. But it wasn't until 20 years later, when a botanist from Brown University arrived, that the odd tree was identified. According to Parris, the tree was first brought to America 100 years ago, and "escaped" into the wild. That’s something that was never allowed in Japan, where anyone found growing the tree outside the royal compound was beheaded. (I guess they didn't like it growing outside the royal compound, huh?) Parris says a single paulownia produces 21 million seeds and a seedling grows 20 feet in a year.
